Post USPS Suppressing Tracking Info of Import Registered Mail as of Oct 1

Starting 1 Oct 2015, the USPS won't post tracking information online for inbound registered items unless they come from one of the countries listed here: http://faq.usps.com/?articleId=1437076354655

Notably absent from that list:

  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

This has all the hallmarks of a catfight between postal operators. đŸ˜¡

For its part, Singapore Post says:

17 September 2015

USA – Registered Letter Mail

The designated operator of USA, USPS, has informed that from 1 October 2015, online tracking and delivery information for registered letter mail sent from Singapore to USA will not be visible or available on USPS website http://www.usps.com. Hence, tracking information is only available up to "Arrival at Destination Post" on SingPost website.

Customers in Singapore can raise enquiry with SingPost if the addressee confirms non-receipt of the Registered Article after 18 working days from posting. SingPost will check with the USPS on the status of the item, and under the international postal agreement, USPS may take up to 60 days to reply to SingPost.

One more thing -- I'm not sure if it's a glitch or a permanent change, but now it looks like USPS isn't posting tracking information online for outbound registered mail items to China either. These are still trackable in China Post's system, however.

If they keep up like this, the USPS is going to destroy their own parcel business. It was already well-nigh impossible for any ordinary person to "thread the needle" and pick a shipping service that is tracked both in the US and China. Now it looks like the only one you can be sure of is Global Express Guaranteedâ„¢ (GXG), which starts at ~$90 USD...very few people are going to pay that when they could probably courier it via DHL, TNT, etc, for less.
