Hello.

I shipped an item to china and it is on customs since 5th january. How long do they keep the item before returning it?

If everything ok, parcel should be released from customs in 2 to 5 days. If not, this means your parcel has delivery or customs clearance problem. You need ask receiver call china post hotline 11183 or 11185 , then try to pay duty and pickup the parcel.
