What is Cainiao?
Cainiao was founded by Alibaba Group in May 2013 with a consortium of logistics companies. Alibaba Group owns 48% of Cainiao.
Cainiao operates a proprietary logistics information platform that links a network of logistics providers, warehouses and distribution centers together in order to enable higher efficiency in China’s logistics industry.
The platform allows participants to confidentially share information on orders, delivery status and user feedback. The information flow and related data analysis empowers delivery companies to provide higher quality service to both merchants and consumers.
Scalable Logistics Platform:
Cainiao’s partnership network is scalable and nimble, making it easy to reach all markets in China including third- and fourth-tier regions and China’s remote rural areas.
The company does not directly own physical infrastructure or employ delivery personnel - the consortium’s members and partners do. This allows Cainiao to scale rapidly because capital requirements and risks are reduced.
Key Metrics:
Cainiao works with 15 strategic logistics partners through China smart logistics. Collectively they operate 1,800 distribution centers, more than 97,000 delivery stations and more than 20,000 Cainiao pick-up spots.
Over 1.5 million delivery personnel in more than 600 cities in 31 provinces were employed by our delivery partners as of June 30, 2014.
More than 6.1 billion packages were generated from transactions on our ecosystem, representing 54% of packages delivered in China, during the 12 months ended June 30, 2014, according to the State Post Bureau of the PRC.
Currently Cainiao handles over 30 million packages per day and processed 278 million packages on Nov. 11, 2014, during Alibaba Group's Singles Day promotion. In the Singles Day promotion in 2013, Cainiao handled 156 million packages compared to a daily average of 16.6 million packages generated from transactions on our China retail marketplaces in the twelve months ended June 30, 2014. This is a reflection of the scalability of our logistics and distribution network.
Cainiao has been working with global partners to reach 217 countries and areas worldwide to enable cross-border e-commerce.
Cainiao started expanding its presence in rural areas in Oct 2014, and has facilitated home delivery service in more than 1,200 counties and villages across China.
