Post Parcel tax clearance

Hi. I returned an item to the seller in china for faulty item a while ago but it seems the seller returned it to the post office because of import tax. Can I pay the import tax instead of the seller? They had returned the parcel to the post office in guangzhou, but didnt even bother to notify me about the tax details. Is there anyway to ask the post office in china to hold the item first? tq
