Post Tracking Status Hasnt Updated in Days... Problem?

Hello,

I had a package shipped via EMS on January 4th to Michigan, USA. The tracking says that it was accepted and that it has departed the Shanghai sorting center on the 4th, but it is now the 10th (almost the 11th) and there has been no updates to the tracking since the 4th. Surely it can't take a week to reach the USA? What is the problem here? Why might the tracking number not be updating for so long? Thank you!

EMS has been averaging 10-16 days to the USA over the past few months. It's a very high priority postal service, but it's still a postal service. This FAQ talks about why international mail takes so long:

I can fly to China in 24 hours! Why does a package take weeks?

Once an item leaves China, it's in a sealed mailbag; it can't be scanned, and its status updated, until the USPS receives it and can scan it. This is why tracking seems to "freeze" for so long while items are between countries.

How long will China Post parcel arrive my country? How long will my tracking status be updated?

It has now been over 16 days since the last update on the package. Is there anyway I could urge delivery of this item? I just think it's very ridiculous that I paid $40 to ship 1 item and it has been well over 2 weeks since any status update. This is a coat for the winter, and at the rate this is going it won't even get here in time for me to wear it before spring. Any idea on how much longer I may need to wait?

wait one more week, it should arrive. Some parcel shipped in Xmas time just arrived USA.

So I did wait 1 more week and there still has been no status change whatsoever. Should I continue to wait or should I apply for a refund? It's been over 3 weeks now, and I worry I won't be able to get a refund if I wait any longer

I suggest you wait by Feb 2nd. If you still can not get new status by Friday, open dispute for refund.

Check the buyer protection policy of the site you bought from -- it should outline when the deadlines are for opening a dispute. If instead you need to contest the charges directly with your credit card company, they usually give you 60 to 120 days to open a dispute, depending on the card issuer and what kind of dispute it is.

After no movement for the 23rd day, I checked with the staff of the website I purchased my item (a winter coat) from about the possibility of a refund for my order due to "Item not received", given that my tracking still has no movements by Friday this week. They told me that they do not give full refunds for items not received, only partial, and that's only if I purchased package insurance from them (which I didn't).

I paid $250 for the coat, plus nearly $50 to have it shipped to me via EMS, for a total of $300. This is a lot of money to lose on a missing package. If I'm not mistaken, wouldn't the seller be liable for the package, as handing it over to EMS/USPS merely delegates responsibility temporarily? Thus, wouldn't the seller be held liable until the package reaches its final destination (my house)?

The way I see it, a mailing service is simply the businesses employee, therefore, the business (the boss) should correct the problem it's employee (the mailing service) makes. I did however pay with a credit card, so I'm wondering if it would be possible to file a chargeback?

At the end of this week it will have been 1 month since the last tracking update, which seems like plenty of time to handle any delays/backlogs. This package is also time sensitive as I can only wear a coat in the winter in my state (which is almost over). Given that this is Express Mail and the amount of time that has gone by, would you say it's possible/fair to win a chargeback on this? Thanks!
