After almost a year of contract talks with no agreement, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers could be in a legal strike position as soon as the 26th of September. For items going to Canada that are at all time-sensitive, it might not be a bad idea to consider shipping via courier for the time being.

Canada Post has had something like 20 labour disruptions over the course of its history, the longest of these running about 6 weeks.

Thanks for sharing the information for Canadian receivers. I hope Canada government will solve the problem with CP workers and the strike won't delay the shipment too much.

You're welcome! Just as an update on this...negotiations were going well for a while, but now they seem to have broken down again. The union says they are ready to start rotating strikes on Monday (Oct 22), which will slow down delivery but not stop it altogether.

The last time the union started rotating strikes, they were locked out by Canada Post (stopping all mail delivery), but then legislated back to work in about two weeks. That said, both the CEO of Canada Post and the Government of Canada have changed since then, so things might not play out like they did last time.

Unfortunately, the situation vis-a-vis Canada Post has gotten worse, not better. They've now asked other UPU member postal services to suspend sending mail and parcels and Canada until they can deal with their current backlog of items:

Canada Post has asked its international partners to halt mail and parcel shipments to Canada as it reels under a 30-day delivery backlog resulting from a labour dispute with its employees.

The Crown corporation said Friday that its domestic customers are also backed up with packages waiting for delivery as rotating strikes that began Oct. 22 continue across the country.

"The backlogs are also extending to international mail and parcels entering the country," Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton said in an email.

"As a result, we have been forced to request that international posts, including the United States Postal Service, refrain from shipping items until we can clear the backlog."

The request covers all 190 countries in the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations agency that represents global postal services and oversees co-operation among them.

This probably couldn't come at a worse time for shippers & receivers, with the busy holiday season in Canada right around the corner.

More updates: the government is publically musing about legislating Canada Post back to work.

In the meantime, the shipping backlog has grown to the point that Canada Post may soon run out of room to accept new parcels:
