As I said, I've already opened a dispute but I really just want the merchandise. Should I just consider it gone forever?

There is always a chance. Some things get delivered many months or even years late. Here are 15 examples:

That said, for the time being it is probably better to get your money back via a dispute, and see if you can't find the merchandise from some other source. If the item eventually shows up, treat it as a bonus. :)
